The David City Alumni Association took a formal approach for an organized banquet in 1971. Prior to that time, the group met on the date of the DCHS Junior Senior Prom. Harold Zinnecker and Mildred “Miny” Smith were the initial organizers for the Alumni Association and laid the ground work for the organization.
The organizers established key factors:
1. Date: The banquet would be held on the last Saturday of May (Memorial Day week-end)
2. Attendees: All alumni were welcome to attend, with special recognition to honor classes being five years apart.
3. Annual meeting would be held at the banquet to elect a Vice-President each year who would move into the office of President the following year. Other offices were added to include Secretary, Alumni Secretary, Treasurer, and board members.
4. Dues and donations were used to fund the association.
Board members played in important role in organizing the banquet, meal, decorations, entertainment and publishing an annual newsletter. Members also took on the task of compiling scrapbooks of the DCHS events. As with any organization, it takes a village of committed members to have a successful association. We encourage anyone interested in being an officer or board member to attend the banquet and meetings. The association is open to new ideas to revitalize the reunion.
The association and banquet have evolved over the years. The alumni association give financial support to activities in the school and scholarships to graduating seniors whose parents are DCHS alumni. The week-end expanded to include an Alumni Golf Tournament open to alumni and guests, as well as tours of the school buildings.
We are forever appreciative of the foresight of all the earlier organizers in their efforts to reunite and instill in our DCHS alumni pride in our school and community.
